Boygenius is performing together again, but the group has not announced an end to its hiatus. Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus reunited during Bridgers’ September 2026 Barclays Center engagement and for a new A24 performance film, without announcing another boygenius record, tour or formal return.
That distinction matters. The three musicians are clearly comfortable sharing a stage and collaborating again. But appearances connected to Bridgers’ solo work do not automatically end the open-ended hiatus the group announced in 2024.
What Happened in the A24 Performance?
On October 9, 2026, A24 released Phoebe Bridgers | Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theatre, a three-song performance film directed by Lance Oppenheim. A24’s film and reports from Pitchfork, SPIN and The Line of Best Fit identify Bridgers, Ethan Gruska, Baker and Dacus as the performers.
Bridgers and Gruska begin the session with “On Video,” her contribution to Oppenheim’s film Primetime. Baker and Dacus then join them for stripped-back performances of “Haunted” and “Lost Boys.”
Both of those songs come from Bridgers’ third solo album, Lost Weekend, which Dead Oceans and Apple Music date to August 14, 2026. That context is important: Baker and Dacus appear in the film as collaborators on Bridgers’ material, not as members launching a newly announced boygenius project.
The session belongs to Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theatre, a performance series produced by A24, A24 Music and Cherry Lane Theatre, according to SPIN and The Line of Best Fit. Its presentation gives the reunion an official, carefully filmed setting, but the film contains no announcement that boygenius has resumed full-time activity.
What it confirms is simpler: Bridgers, Baker and Dacus are making music together again.
The Trio Had Already Reunited in 2026
The Cherry Lane film was not the first time all three members had appeared together since beginning their hiatus.
On September 24, 2026, Baker and Dacus joined Bridgers during the first night of her three-show Barclays Center engagement. Pitchfork, JamBase and Stereogum reported that the trio performed two boygenius songs, “Not Strong Enough” and “Cool About It.”
That appearance supplied direct evidence of a boygenius reunion in the literal sense. The three members were back onstage performing music released under the group’s name. Even then, however, the set was part of a Phoebe Bridgers concert rather than a boygenius show.
The A24 film carries unusual weight because Bridgers’ Lost Tour was designed as a device-free experience. Barclays Center and Ticketmaster said phones and recording equipment would be secured during the performances. As a result, the Cherry Lane session offers something the tour itself largely withheld: an authorized, professionally produced close-up of the trio performing together.
For fans, that visibility can make the reunion feel like a larger event. Official footage is not the same thing as an official comeback, though.
Why the Appearances Feel Significant
The case for renewed boygenius activity is not difficult to understand. All three members appeared together on a major concert stage and then in a polished performance film within a matter of weeks. The Barclays appearance included established boygenius songs, while the Cherry Lane session arrived through A24 and was directed by Oppenheim.
These reunions also show that the group’s hiatus did not prevent its members from continuing to collaborate. Nothing about the documented appearances suggests a permanent split. The trio remains willing to perform together when the occasion fits.
But the limits of the evidence are equally clear. Neither event was billed as the beginning of a new boygenius era. The Cherry Lane set centers Bridgers’ solo album, and no new boygenius recording was introduced. There has been no confirmed group tour, release schedule or promotional campaign.
The most accurate description, then, is that boygenius has reunited for performances without formally ending its hiatus.
How Boygenius Reached This Point
Bridgers, Baker and Dacus formed boygenius in 2018, releasing their self-titled six-song EP digitally on October 26 of that year, according to Matador’s catalog, Apple Music and Pitchfork’s contemporary release coverage.
Each member already had an independent career, but the project developed beyond a one-time collaboration. On March 31, 2023, the trio released its first full-length album, the record, a date documented by Apple Music, Interscope Records and contemporary coverage from Axios.
The album elevated boygenius from an acclaimed side project to one of the defining alternative-rock groups of its moment. On November 11, 2023, the trio appeared on Saturday Night Live, performing “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.”
Then, during two acoustic sets at the Smell in Los Angeles on February 1, 2024, boygenius said it was going away “for the foreseeable future.” Representatives confirmed the hiatus to Pitchfork and USA Today. The language signaled an indefinite pause rather than a breakup with a fixed ending.
Three days later, the Recording Academy awarded boygenius three Grammys. The record won Best Alternative Music Album, while “Not Strong Enough” received Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.
The timing made the hiatus unusual but not contradictory. Boygenius stepped away after completing a major album cycle and receiving its highest-profile industry recognition. The group did not need to dissolve for its members to return their attention to individual work.
What Would Make the Comeback Official?
A genuine return would require something more definite than a guest appearance. That could be a statement from the trio or its representatives, an explicit declaration that the hiatus has ended, or the announcement of a new boygenius single, EP, album or tour.
A sustained campaign under the boygenius name would also make the group’s status clearer. So far, none of those developments has been confirmed.
That does not make the 2026 reunions meaningless. They show that the group remains a living creative relationship rather than a sealed chapter. Baker and Dacus can step into Bridgers’ solo world, and all three can revisit boygenius songs together.
For now, however, the careful answer remains the right one: boygenius is together again in the everyday sense, but not officially back from hiatus. The trio has reopened the possibility of future activity without promising what comes next.
