Kilby Block Party is a Salt Lake City music festival whose three-day 2027 edition traces its roots to a 2019 celebration of Kilby Court, the city’s long-running all-ages venue. What started as a literal block party for the venue’s twentieth anniversary has grown into an event at Utah State Fairpark that reports roughly 30,000 attendance entries per day. Its partial 2027 lineup—led at the top of the poster by Deftones, The Strokes and Jungle—shows how a festival grounded in a local indie community became a nationally covered destination.
A Local Festival With a National-Scale Lineup
Kilby Block Party is scheduled to return to Utah State Fairpark from May 14 through May 16, 2027, according to the festival’s official FAQ and reporting from Axios Salt Lake City, KSL and the Deseret News.
The lineup announced on October 28, 2026, stretches well beyond any single genre. Deftones, The Strokes and Jungle occupy the poster’s top tier. Fontaines D.C., Slayyyter and Lil Yachty are also prominently billed, giving the festival an immediate mix of alternative metal, indie rock, dance music, pop and hip-hop.
Further down the bill are IDLES, Spoon, Weyes Blood, Phantogram, Hot Chip, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Kim Gordon, Julien Baker, Atlas Sound, Iceage and Erika de Casier. Whitney is scheduled for a set officially billed as a Light Upon the Lake 10 Year Anniversary Set, according to both the festival lineup and Stereogum.
It is an expansive bill, but not yet a complete one. The official lineup currently displays roughly a dozen “Announcing Soon” positions, while contemporary reports give slightly different counts. That unfinished poster is the latest stage in a much longer growth story.
It Began With Kilby Court
Kilby Block Party did not begin as a large festival searching for an identity. It began with one already in place.
The first edition was held in 2019 to mark the twentieth anniversary of Kilby Court. The festival’s official history, SLUG Magazine, KSL and Axios all describe that original event as a celebration of the all-ages venue and the community that had formed around it.
That connection matters because small venues do more than provide stages. They introduce audiences to developing artists, give local musicians a place to perform and create relationships among fans who may otherwise have little in common. An all-ages policy can deepen that role by allowing younger listeners to participate before they are old enough to enter bars and clubs.
Kilby Block Party therefore inherited something a new festival cannot manufacture quickly: trust. Its name already carried meaning for Salt Lake City concertgoers. Instead of building a generic event and adding a local story afterward, organizers expanded a celebration rooted in an existing music community.
From a Block Party to Utah State Fairpark
The festival’s rise can be seen through a handful of milestones.
In 2019, it was a block party commemorating Kilby Court’s anniversary. By May 2023, it had moved into the much larger setting of Utah State Fairpark, where The Strokes appeared among the headliners. Axios reported that booking when the 2023 lineup was announced, and KSL later noted the band’s previous Kilby appearance while covering the 2027 edition.
The 2026 festival demonstrated how broad its ambitions had become. Turnstile, the xx and Lorde closed the festival’s three days, according to Pitchfork and the performance schedule published by the Deseret News. Those artists occupy different corners of contemporary music, from hardcore-rooted rock to atmospheric indie pop and arena-scale songwriting.
The clearest measure of the transformation, however, is attendance. The festival’s official history says it draws approximately 30,000 attendees per day, while music-business publication Hits Daily Double reported more than 30,000 per day for the 2026 edition. KSL separately reported an estimated 90,000 visits across that festival’s three days. That is far removed from a neighborhood anniversary gathering, even if the Kilby Court connection remains central to the event’s public identity.
The Music Expanded Around the Festival’s Indie Core
Kilby Block Party’s growth did not require it to erase its original character. Instead, its booking strategy appears to have widened around that foundation.
The 2027 poster still contains artists closely aligned with indie and alternative music. The Strokes, Fontaines D.C., IDLES, Spoon, Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Julien Baker and Kim Gordon all fit naturally within a festival descended from a small independent venue.
At the same time, the lineup reaches into heavier music through Deftones, dance-oriented sounds through Jungle and Hot Chip, electronic pop through Phantogram, pop through Slayyyter and hip-hop through Lil Yachty. That breadth gives the event access to several overlapping audiences without making its history irrelevant.
Whitney’s album-centered performance also reflects a venue-minded approach to programming. A set built around Light Upon the Lake treats an album as part of a shared musical history rather than presenting every artist as another interchangeable name on a crowded poster.
This balance helps explain the festival’s appeal. Its lineup is broad enough to attract travelers, but specific enough to suggest a point of view.
Who Are the 2027 Headliners?
The safest answer is less definite than some early reports suggest.
KSL and Stereogum describe Deftones, The Strokes and Jungle as the three headliners. Pitchfork and the Deseret News apply the term to those artists as well as Fontaines D.C., Slayyyter and Lil Yachty. The Salt Lake Tribune identifies five headliners, excluding Lil Yachty from that group.
The official lineup page presents the artists in billing order without visibly assigning a formal headliner label. For that reason, Deftones, The Strokes and Jungle are best described as occupying the poster’s top tier, while Fontaines D.C., Slayyyter and Lil Yachty are prominently billed.
That distinction matters because established publications have interpreted the same announcement differently. Until Kilby Block Party publicly defines the categories, the disagreement should remain visible rather than being resolved by assumption.
What Remains Unknown About Kilby Block Party 2027
Roughly a dozen positions on the lineup remain marked for later announcement. Pitchfork counted 11 unrevealed artists, while the current official lineup page displays 12 “Announcing Soon” images and KSL described the number as approximately a dozen. Any names circulated outside the official announcement remain unconfirmed.
The incomplete lineup also means the final number of performers cannot yet be stated with confidence. Reports have used both “70” and “more than 70,” but the concealed positions and conflicting counts make an exact final total premature. A complete daily schedule and stage assignments had not been announced as of October 28, 2026.
Those gaps do not obscure what the current poster already demonstrates. Kilby Block Party can now place globally known artists across rock, pop, dance and hip-hop within the same weekend—and attract national coverage for doing so.
The Venue Is Still the Story
Kilby Block Party became a major festival by scaling the credibility surrounding Kilby Court instead of leaving that history behind. The 2019 anniversary celebration supplied a clear identity, the move to Utah State Fairpark created room for growth, and increasingly broad bookings turned a local institution into a destination event.
The famous names show how large the festival has become. Its connection to a small all-ages venue explains why it became distinctive enough to grow in the first place.
